Who We Are
The Illusion of Separation
We believe the separation we perceive between ourselves, one another, and the living world is ultimately an illusion. Yet much of the modern world has been built around this separation — humanity from nature, one people from another, the individual from the collective, and the present from the generations that came before it. We believe this disconnection has become one of the great illnesses of our time. If everything is connected, why do so many of us feel alone? Why, in a world more connected than ever, do we experience such profound loneliness and separation? We see this as a symptom of a greater illness: that we have forgotten our connection to one another, to the Earth, to those who have passed before us, and to the greater whole to which we belong. Their histories live on and are remembered in the Earth, including many of those that were never written into literature or recorded in the histories we inherited. And yet connection is among the first things we experience. Our first intelligence is an intelligence of the heart; it's the place through which connection is first felt. Before we understand language, identity, achievement, or the boundaries of the individual self, we know the world through relationship: the bond between a baby and its mother, through touch, presence, warmth, and care. The heart is what connects us to one another, to the living world, and to something greater than ourselves. It's time for us to return to the intelligence of the heart, to restore our capacity for belonging, compassion, and the recognition of ourselves in one another, and to meet the world not as something separate from us, but as something in which we deeply participate.
